Biosecurity: More Than Facilities, It Is a Habit That Makes the Difference
In the livestock industry, biosecurity is one of the key foundations for maintaining animal health and ensuring sustainable production. Proper biosecurity practices help minimize the risk of pathogens entering and spreading within and between farm areas.
However, biosecurity is not simply about how complete or sophisticated the available facilities are. Having fences, footbaths, handwashing stations, changing rooms, and disinfection facilities does not automatically guarantee effective biosecurity. The success of a biosecurity program depends largely on how these facilities are used and how consistently every individual follows the established procedures.
In other words, biosecurity is not only a system—it is also a habit.
Understanding the Three-Zone Concepts
One important approach to biosecurity is to divide the farm into three zones: the red zone, yellow zone, and green zone. This zoning system helps control the movement of people, vehicles, equipment, and materials according to their level of contamination risk.
- Red Zone: High-Risk Area
The red zone is the area with the highest contamination risk, such as animal housing areas or other areas with direct contact with livestock. Access to this zone should be restricted to authorized personnel. Equipment used within the red zone should not be moved to other areas without undergoing the appropriate cleaning and disinfection procedures.
- Yellow Zone: Transition Area
The yellow zone serves as a transition area between external areas and higher-risk areas. It is an important point for ensuring that personnel, equipment, and materials entering the farm have undergone the required biosecurity procedures. Depending on the farm's biosecurity design and management system, procedures such as changing footwear, changing work clothing, handwashing, and other sanitation measures can be implemented within this zone.
- Green Zone: Clean Area
The green zone is an area with a relatively lower contamination risk, such as administrative areas or external areas that do not have direct contact with livestock. Clear separation between the three zones helps create a barrier to reduce the risk of pathogens moving from high-risk areas to cleaner areas. However, zoning will only be effective when everyone understands the boundaries and consistently follows the procedures for moving between zones.
Sanitation and Disinfection
Sanitation and disinfection are essential components of a biosecurity program. However, they are not the same process and should not be considered a single step. Sanitation focuses on removing dirt, organic matter, and contaminants from surfaces. Disinfection, on the other hand, is intended to reduce or inactivate microorganisms that may remain on surfaces after cleaning. Therefore, effective cleaning is the foundation of effective disinfection.
Sanitation and disinfection procedures can be applied to various areas and objects that may serve as potential pathways for pathogen transmission, including:
- livestock housing and farm facilities
- equipment and work tools
- vehicles
- farm entry and exit areas
- storage areas
- shared facilities used by personnel.
The effectiveness of disinfection is also influenced by several factors, including the type and concentration of disinfectant, contact time, surface condition, presence of organic matter, and application method. Therefore, disinfectants should always be used according to their recommended instructions and established procedures.
Controlling the Movement of Vehicles and People
Vehicles and people are two important pathways through which pathogens can enter a farm. Vehicles moving between different locations may carry contaminants on their tires, undercarriage, cargo areas, or equipment. Therefore, vehicle movement should be properly managed through access restrictions, inspection procedures, and appropriate cleaning and disinfection measures based on the level of risk. The same principle applies to personnel movement. Farm personnel, technicians, veterinarians, workers, vendors, and visitors who move between multiple farms or locations in a single day may become potential vectors for pathogen transmission if appropriate biosecurity procedures are not followed.
Some measures that can be implemented include:
- restricting access to authorized personnel
- recording and controlling visitors
- establishing clear entry and exit procedures
- using designated clothing and footwear according to each zone
- washing and sanitizing hands
- implementing appropriate procedures for changing personal protective equipment, clothing, or footwear when moving between areas with different levels of risk.
Personnel Hygiene
One aspect of biosecurity that is sometimes overlooked is personnel hygiene. Biosecurity is not only about keeping housing facilities clean, disinfecting vehicles, or providing footbaths. The hygiene of every individual within the system is also an important part of the biosecurity chain.
Hands, clothing, footwear, and personal equipment can become potential vehicles for pathogen transmission if they are not properly managed. Therefore, every individual working on or visiting a farm should understand that simple actions—such as:
- washing hands before and after work
- following procedures for changing clothing and footwear
- avoiding the movement of equipment from one area to another without proper sanitation
- following designated movement pathways,
are all important parts of an effective biosecurity program. These actions may seem simple, but when consistently practiced by everyone, they can make a significant difference.
Biosecurity Is Everyone's Responsibility
Effective biosecurity is not the responsibility of one person alone, such as a veterinarian or farm manager. Biosecurity is a shared responsibility across the entire team. From farm workers, supervisors, and technicians to security personnel, drivers, visitors, and external parties entering the farm—every individual plays a role in maintaining the biosecurity chain. This is why biosecurity awareness and training need to be reinforced continuously. Personnel should not only understand what procedures need to be followed, but also why those procedures matter. When every individual understands that even a small action can affect the health of an entire flock or herd, following biosecurity procedures becomes more than a requirement—it becomes part of the work culture.
Biosecurity Starts with the Right Habits
Ultimately, biosecurity is not simply about having complete facilities or implementing complex procedures. It is about consistently doing the right things, every day, by every person. The implementation of three-zone systems, proper sanitation and disinfection, controlled movement of vehicles and people, and strong personnel hygiene are interconnected elements of an effective biosecurity program. Because good biosecurity starts with the right habits.
